King James Version Bible History

When James IV was crowned King James I of England in 1603, the religious establishment was in an uproar. The printing press made distribution of several versions of the Bible possible, and Protestants, Puritans and the Church of England had their own Bibles and political views. In a 1604 meeting of religious scholars, the idea was presented by the Puritans to create a new Bible that would unite all believers. The Puritans felt strongly that the flaws of the three most popular Bibles that were in use at the time, the Great Bible, the Bishop’s Bible, and the Geneva Bible, should be remedied. After much discussion during the Hampton Court Conference, King James instructed a team of translators to create a new translation of the Bible using the Bishop’s Bible as a guide. And so, King James started to unite his people by commissioning the King James Bible—a universally accepted translation for all.

FAQ's

Is the King James Bible accurate?

For centuries now, the KJV has been relied upon as an accurate and trustworthy translation, developed from the best original Hebrew, Greek, and Aramaic texts by the best scholars of the time. Christian Art Gifts, alongside most publications of the King James Version today, uses the 1769 Oxford Edition, a revision of minor spelling and printing errors.

Why should I read the KJV?

The King James Version is beloved for its accuracy, beauty, and tradition. Some may find it antiquated, but this is exactly the reason why generations of people cherish it. The language adds a certain charm while communicating the message of Scripture with precision. Although it is not contemporary in terms of style, many of its phrases are still used today, such as “eat, drink, and be merry,” (Ecc. 8:15), “a drop in the bucket,” (Is. 40:15), and “out of the mouths of babes” (Ps. 8:2).

Who wrote the King James Version?

The King James Version was commissioned by King James I after a conference of churchmen requested a revision to current translations of the Bible, which they deemed “corrupt.” King James was a Protestant, ruling after Queen Elizabeth I, who had reinstated Protestantism as the official religion of England. King James approved 54 revisers for the task, 47 of whom actively participated in its translation. They were divided into “companies” and translated passages of the Bible assigned to them. The project was overseen by Richard Bancroft, archbishop of Canterbury, who standardized doctrinal conventions for the scholars, upholding the integrity of the project.

When was the King James Version of the Bible written?

The King James Version was commissioned in 1604 during the early reign of King James. By June 30th of that year, he had approved a list of dozens of scholars to assume the project. A Bible had not been produced at this level under royal oversight since the Septuagint (the Greek-language version of the Old Testament) was developed between the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC. Also called the Authorized Version, the KJV was completed at last in 1611 and quickly became the standard English Bible in the mid-1600’s.

Is the KJV Catholic?

Although commissioned by King James I, who was staunchly Protestant, some Catholics may use the King James Version. In its original form, it contained the Apocrypha; however, this was officially removed in 1885, and standard editions of the KJV Bible used today do not include it, making it more popular among Protestants than it is among Catholics.
